It seems like Brett Goldstein came out of nowhere when he appeared as the angry soccer player Roy Kent. His incredible performance in the series has earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. But for audiences in the U.K., Goldstein has been a prolific presence with his many feature films and TV appearances.
Goldstein began his career as a scriptwriter. Fresh out of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Goldstein began writing scripts for the Edinburg Fringe Festival. His knack for stand-up comedy also made him a brilliant storyteller. Hence, he released his first stand-up comedy special, Brett Goldstein Grew Up in a Strip Club.
In 2013, Goldstein wrote the script for the romantic comedy film, SuperBob. He also played the role of a Peckham postman who became a superhero. After the film, Goldstein collaborated with acclaimed comedian Catherine Tate for her spin-off series, Catherine Tate’s Nan. A few years later, Goldstein joined Tate on her live comedy tour.
In 2016, Goldstein’s role in Adult Life Skills earned him a BIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor. The accolade led to several more notable roles in Doctor Who, Uncle, Hoff the Record, and Undercover. Goldstein also launched his first podcast series, Films to Be Buried With. The show features several guests who discuss films that influenced their lives. In 2020, Goldstein scored the role of Roy Kent in the award-winning series Ted Lasso. Apart from being a cast member, he also served as executive producer and writer for the show. His role as Roy Kent earned him eight awards, including Critic’s Choice Television Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. The following year, he lent his voice to the Adult Swim series Robot Chicken where he played the role of Tony Stark in the episode “May Cause Light Cannibalism.” In 2022, Goldstein appeared as Hercules in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Over the course of his acting career, Goldstein has maintained his stand-up comedy career. He appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe four times from 2010 to 2015. In 2016, Goldstein went on tour with The Catherine Tate Show Live. Two years later, he made his phenomenal return to Edinburgh Festival Fringe and performed his latest comedy special, What is Love Baby Don’t Hurt Me.
