The notorious Alcatraz Island is a short distance from the Golden Gate Bridge, so you can easily visit both on the same day. Alcatraz was once a military fort and was then transformed into one of the world’s most famous maximum-security prisons. You can book a tour that will take you from Fisherman’s Wharf Pier 33 to Alcatraz Island to see this National Historic Landmark. During your visit, you can listen to an audio tour which recounts some fascinating stories including some of the well-known criminals that were incarcerated here. You’ll also hear about some of the unbelievable escape attempts – both successful and unsuccessful ones. The likes of Al Capone, the Birdman of Alcatraz, and George “Machine-Gun” Kelly all served time in Alcatraz.

Golden Gate Bridge

Wherever you are in San Francisco, you’ll see the impressive, iconic Golden Gate Bridge. The stunning suspension bridge is one mile wide and connects San Francisco to Marin County. The bridge opened in 1937, when it held the title of both the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world. A great way to explore the area is to hire a bicycle to ride across the bridge to enjoy the spectacular views of the bay and visit the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Golden Gate Park has over 1,000 acres of beautiful landscape to explore and there are often events such as live musicians, plus there’s a golf course and disc golf course. You can also take a boat trip to explore the bay, with 60-minute trips to see all the landmarks or longer, relaxing cruises.

San Francisco has a great food scene, influenced by the history and diversity of the city. The bay’s longstanding seafood industry combined with the international cuisine inspirations in Chinatown, Little Italy, and Mission District ensure unlimited gastronomy options.

Lazy Bear
The two-Michelin star restaurant Lazy Bear in the Mission District has become one of the city’s most prestigious eateries. Combining traditional American dining nostalgia with inspiration from the wild, this unique restaurant has an equally unique menu. The Seafood Tower includes Foxley Oyster, Bay Scallop and Dungeness Crab Dip, while meat dishes like pork chops and dry-aged beef tartare are also popular.

Dalida
Named by Time Out as the top restaurant choice in San Francisco, Dalida on Montgomery Street in The Presidio is an eastern-Mediterranean wonderland. The menu includes amazing seafood platters, Cypriot lamb chops, and a selection of traditional Mediterranean kebabs. You can also choose the Chef’s Menu, where your dining experience will be curated for you.

Rich Table
Located just a 15-minute walk from the Orpheum Theatre, Rich Table is a high-end but relaxed restaurant that is perfect for a pre-theater meal. You can try Hog Island oysters, a choice of dishes with Dungeness crab, and their 21-day dry aged ribeye “Animal Style”. The restaurant is also renowned for its fantastic cocktail and wine menus.

Mission Rock Resort
If you enjoy dining with views across the water, there are lots of waterfront restaurants in San Francisco. Mission Rock Resort is one of the best seafood restaurants in the area, with stunning views of the bay. Popular dishes include shellfish plateaus, oysters, fish tacos, and non-seafood options like burgers. The restaurant often has live music and there is a great cocktail menu to try.

Mister Jiu’s
For foodies who love Asian cuisine, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to dine in Chinatown. For authentic Chinese food, Mr Jiu’s is one of the most highly rated and has been awarded a Michelin star. The Tasting Menu is a great option if you want to try a variety of Chinese dishes, with classics like Peking-style roast duck, as well as locally sourced seafood ingredients.

Charmaine’s Rooftop Lounge
For a light bite to eat and drinks with a view of the San Francisco skyline, head to Charmaine’s at the San Francisco Proper Hotel. It has been ranked as one of the best rooftop bars in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler. Located on Market Street, just a 5-minute walk from the Orpheum Theatre, it is the perfect pre- or post-theater stop-off.

You can order small dishes like crispy fish tacos and sliders, but the main appeal is the rooftop bar lounge. There is a tempting cocktail menu, as well as an extensive choice of high-quality wines and spirits to enjoy while overlooking the city.

If you fancy something more substantial to eat, the Proper Hotel is also home to Villon restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch and brunch. 

Wherever you fancy dining, we recommend that you try to book in advance, especially if you are dining before attending an event at the Orpheum Theatre, as it can get busy.

Weather in San Francisco

The warmest months in San Francisco are August, September, and November. During these months, average temperatures reach over 20°C, so sightseeing might not be as comfortable at this time of year. However, the city sees more tourists in July and August. So, if you want to visit outside of peak season, September and October are the best months to avoid crowds.

The city experiences the most rainfall in January, February, and December. The weather can be unpredictable, so it is recommended that you pack clothes for all types of weather.
