“A Broadway musical version of the Billy Wilder film finds exhilarating new ways to make the gender comedy sing” – The New York Times
SOME LIKE IT HOT is based on the crime comedy movie directed by Billy Wilder of the same name. The production premiered at movie theaters in 1959, and it has now made a name for itself as one of the most beloved comedy movies out there! The classic Hollywood cult comedy stands proudly as one of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous credits as a successful actress, as well as Billy Wilder’s as a critically acclaimed director.
Set in the Windy City just before the end of Prohibition in the 1930s, the tale follows a pair of musicians who work at a mob-run speakeasy. The musicians, called Joe and Jerry, witness the gangster boss Spats murder an informant. As Spats decides to kill them for being witnesses, Joe and Jerry have no other choice but to flee Chicago. To escape the mob, the musicians disguise themselves by dressing up as women and joining an all-female traveling swing band. On their adventures, Joe falls in love with the band’s lead singer, Sugar, but his cover as Josephine gets in the way. All the while, Jerry’s disguise as Daphne helps him discover and live out his truest, fullest self. The Broadway production is a contemporary revamp of the classic Hollywood comedy and a story all about self-discovery.
